The students of the Nirmala College for women in the city have shown the way in the eradication of plastic carry bags. The students of the Department of Geography started making a paper bag from the newspaper every day, from December 2009. The exercise went on and by July 2018 they manufactured almost one lakh paper bags. Initially, the bags were given to the college canteen and then to the vans that sold packed lunches, free of cost. The journey began with Assistant Professor of Biotechnology, KSG College demonstrating on making cloth bags during a seminar at the college. They were highly appreciated and also won an award from the Nature Conservation Society in 2016. The bags are made of simple folds and paste.  They are helped by the teaching faculty whenever they run short of papers.
