Uttar Pradesh labour minister Swamy Prasad Maurya on Friday criticised Congress President Rahul Gandhi for attacking Prime Minister Narendra Modi, by calling him a "mad man who doesn't deserve to lead India's oldest political party," further adding that "Rahul Gandhi has been continuously calling the prime minister a thief. Look at the decency of Modi that he is not (even) responding... It is a matter of great shame that the Congress leader is mouthing such (abusive) language for the country's prime minister." Maurya has recently switched parties from the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) before the 2017 Assembly elections.
The minister made these comments to reporters on the sidelines of an event in Mainpuri. He told them that "this childish behaviour did not behoove of the Congress chief." Maurya concluded that this behavior of Rahul was immature. The minister also said, that he feels that the vicious Congress campaign on the Rafale deal will not lower BJP victory prospects in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Last week, Rahul Gandhi had fired shots at the PM over the Rafale jet deal.
Gandhi had also asked for answers on several issues relating to the Rafale jet fighter deal, further asking him to also clarify on the reason why the former French president Francois Hollande allegedly called him a "thief". "The chowkidar of the country has taken out Rs 20,000 crore from the pockets of the poor, martyrs and the jawans and put it in the pocket of (Anil) Ambani," Gandhi said at a meeting in the Jais area of his Lok Sabha constituency.
