  • It is reported that State-run miner Coal India Ltd (CIL) is all set to construct eighteen new washeries by 2020.
  • Reportedly, 15 coal washeries with a total capacity of 36.8 million ton (MT) per year are being currently operated by Coal India Ltd.
  • According to Mr. Anindya Sinha, Advisor-Projects at the coal ministry, out of the eighteen commissioned washeries, two washeries have already been inaugurated at the Bharat Coal Fields.

It is reported that State-run miner Coal India Ltd (CIL) is all set to construct eighteen new washeries by 2020. It has been planned by Coal India to construct nine coal washries for processing of coking and the remaining nine for non-coking coal.

Reportedly, 15 coal washeries with a total capacity of 36.8 million ton (MT) per year are being currently operated by Coal India Ltd. Of these 11 coal washeries are processing of coking coal and the rest are non-coking projects. These coal washeries are of the capacity of 20.58 MT and 16.22 MT per year, respectively. As per the data of the last financial year (2017-2018), the total washed coal production from the existing coal washeries stood at 12.45 MT per year.

According to Mr. Anindya Sinha, Advisor-Projects at the coal ministry, out of the eighteen commissioned washeries, two washeries have already been inaugurated at the Bharat Coal Fields. The remaining washeries will also be soon instituted, in a phased manner till December 2020. This will increase the capacity of the coal washeries with 28.1 (MT) per year for coking coal and 67.5 MT for non-coking coal respectively. 

Coal India is also working on a project of ‘conversion of coal to methanol’. But this project is on an approval stage. Mr. Anindya Sinha, Advisor-Projects at the coal ministry also informed that CIL has signed a pact with Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE) for an environmental auditing system. and IT has already audited around 20 coal mines of CIL and aims to complete all the mines auditing within a year.
