India is all set for the annual summit with Russia for this year which shall take place on Friday in New Delhi. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi shall meet Russian President Vladimir Putin for discussing key matters. It is being said that this summit would turn out to be a fateful one with having implications for the relationship between India and the United States as India makes itself ready to finally sign the S-400 missile defense deal. If reports are to be believed, Narendra Modi is fully aware of the potential sanctions that India may invite from the US if the deal is signed. A high level delegation shall be witnessed in the summit that shall include foreign minister Sergei Lavrov, who will be accompanying the Russian President.
A private dinner would take place with PM Modi on Thursday when the guests would arrive. The next day, once the formal delegation talks are over, both the nations are expected to sign a range of key pacts. Apart from the much talked about defense agreement, Russia and India is also being expected to make an announcement for a newly deliberated space cooperation mechanism, the stage for which was set when PM had earlier announced that a man would be sent to the moon by 2022 by India. Simultaneous engagements are being made with the US authorities for preparing them for the S-400 deal. Mattis and Pompeo were reported to have held a discussion continuing for a hour with Ajit Doval regarding the same.
Russia shall provide equipment for India’s space mission keeping in mind the “Make in India” agenda. Furthermore, offers have been extended by Russia to train an Indian cosmonaut for manned moon mission by allowing him/her to travel to its portion of the International Space Station. The next subject for the cooperation between the two countries is energy. India has recently increased investment in Russia’s energy sector. Even energy imports from Russia grew drastically in 2017. LPG was reported to be shipped from Russia to Gujarat a few months back after which, Oil Minister Mr. Dharmendra Pradhan proposed for Indo-Russia partnership in gasification of India’s economy. Russian lawmakers have introduced an e-visa for Indian visitors for ease of business. ONGC Videsh Ltd. is reported to have increased stakes in Russia’s Far East which happens to be a vulnerable area due to Chinese presence.
