Under the government's Digi Yatra initiative, travellers will soon be able to get past airport formalities in the country with facial recognition biometrics and can get away with the cumbersome boarding passes.
The initiative would be forward-looking and futuristic, seeking to promote paperless and hassle-free air travel. This would be completely voluntary and will come into force by February 2019. The technology will soon be operational at Bengaluru and Hyderabad airports. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) plans to roll out the initiative at Kolkata, Varanasi, Pune and Vijayawada airports by April next year, as per the ministry.
Union Aviation minister Suresh Prabhu said that “passengers will be taken at face value”. Each passenger who wishes to opt for voluntary Digi Yatra will need to generate a unique digi yatra ID by giving his or her details on an aviation ministry portal.
