The University of Central Florida (UCF) in the US is selling a very unique product, experimental Martian and asteroid soil. Buyers who are interested in purchasing can get soil for $20 a kg plus additional shipping charges. The standardized method is developed by researchers of the university for creating the Martian and asteroid soil. The soil is known as stimulants. The formula of the soil is based on the chemical signature of soil from Mars which is collected by Curiosity rover of NASA. This helped the physicists develop the Martian soil at the University of Central Florida, a study published in the journal Icarus. From UCF, Dan Britt said, "The simulant is useful for research as we look to go to Mars. If we are going to go, we'll need food, water, and other essentials. As we are developing solutions, we need a way to test how these ideas will fare". Britt further explained. "You wouldn't want to discover that your method didn't work when we are actually there".
Scientists are looking for ways to grow food on Mars thus need to test their techniques on the soil. The aim is to find the techniques on soil that most closely resembles the stuff on Mars. Researchers believe that there is a market for the stimulant. At $20 a kilogram plus additional shipping charges, it is very easy for the University of Central Florida to send an order rather than trying to make it available for labs across the nation. The team of UCF already has about 30 pending orders.
