A road to connect three villages of Thengumarahada, Kalampalayam and Alli Moyar to the Bhavanisagar area is being built. The stretch is proposed to be 10km long and would cut through Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve in Erode to Mudhumalai Tiger Reserve in Udhagamandalam. Conservationists worry that the plan might hamper with the wildlife. But the locals seem to be somewhat satisfied as their long waited demand is likely to be fulfilled now. They have been demanding a road near the Nilgiris so as to get better access to the basic facilities. With a budget of around 9 crores for the road and the bridge, clearance approval application has been sent to Wildlife Board which is likely to receive the response by next month. But the conservationists view it as a great disaster for local wildlife as some unique and critically endangered ones like the Asian king vulture, tigers, elephants reside here. Also, it is also advised for the locals living in Thengumarahada to be relocated outside the Tiger Reserve. Owing to logistical and administrative issue life there is a difficult thing. Connectivity is poor over here. Wildlife Board will be considering everything including wildlife and local dwellers’ issues and then only the permission will be granted.
