The depleting health of Ganga is known to all and now the alarm bells ring even louder. Studies say that the water level in the summer season has depleted so much in the river that it might be possible that it may be unable to carry water in non- monsoon seasons over long stretches between Varanasi and Kolkata. It was also revealed that since the commencement of irrigation in 1970, the base flow has decreased by about 50% in the river and might in the next 30 years decrease by 75%. The cause is the indiscriminate extraction of groundwater and this condition might lead to an increase in pollution as there will be less scope of dilution for the waste. Though domestic lives and even industries depend much on this water source yet urgent steps need to be taken in order to prevent the catastrophe of the river drying away. The use of modern technology reveals that the rate of decreasing base flow is from 0.5 to 38.1 cm/year from 1999 to 2013. Areas around Varanasi, Bihar and West Bengal are on serious depletion trends and issues of streamflow capture can also be seen. Called the BreadBasket of South Asia, the Ganga basin will have to face food security issues in future if issues of groundwater pumping are not taken up seriously.
