The Supreme Court of Pakistan in its landmark judgment acquitted Asia Bibi, a Pakistani Christian woman who was accused of blasphemy after spending 8 years on death row. In 2009 Asia had a heated altercation with a group of women in her neighbourhood in which she was accused of insulting Prophet Muhammad. She was beaten up by the radicals in her house leading her to confess the charges of blasphemy.

Asia was released from the Multan prison after she was acquitted last week by the Apex Court. This acquittal has sparked a violent movement throughout Pakistan. The extremist masses want Asia to be hanged and this had led to a turmoil in the cities of Pakistan. Also a few of them asking for the judge to be hanged too because of this judgment. On the other side the court observed that there was no conclusive proof to make her liable for Blasphemy. The case presented by the prosecution was weak and the confession was based on coercion, on such grounds a person cannot be held guilty.

Amidst of all this Asia’s life is in danger after the protests had gone violent. Her family has requested to seek asylum from different countries of the world. Netherlands has accepted there request and has initiated the necessary paperwork to provide her asylum in the country. She would be taken to Netherlands later this week.
