According to the latest reports published by the UN, the ozone layer is recovering from the stage of dangerous depletion caused by hazardous emission of chemicals. Ozone layer protects the atmosphere against the harmful cancer causing rays directly coming from the sun. Reports suggested that the ozone layer is recovering at a rate of one to three percent per decade.

The protection layer in the upper stratosphere started to deplete in the late 1980’s because of the man made gases that were discharged in the atmosphere damaging the sensitive upper layer. In 1987 a ban was put by the Montreal Protocol on man made gases that worked as a control mechanism to stop the ozone layer from depletion. The Antarctic hole that was severely damaged is recovering from the setback and is expected to get better with time.

The U.N. Environment and the World Meteorological Organization in a statement added that the sanctions and the ban on the chlorofluorocarbons ( CFC ) used widely in air conditioners and refrigerators, which were hampering the recovery of the ozone layer has proved to be quite beneficial. Officials believe that the ozone in the stratosphere will completely heal in around 2060 like it was in the 1980’s if it goes by this rate, provided that a check must be kept on the emission of CFC-11 coming from eastern Asia. CFC-11 could delay the recovery by around 15-20 years.
