The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) on Monday issued a statement in which they demanded the withdrawal of the cases filed during the ‘Bharat bandh’ held on 2 April 2018 for SC/ST Act 1989 in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. The statement further said that the failure of such withdrawal of cases will make the party reconsider their decision to give outside support to Congress in the states.
BSP has given support to Congress defeating Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) in the recently concluded Assembly elections in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh. While the Congress won 99 seats in Rajasthan and 119 seats in Madhya Pradesh, the Bahujan Samaj Party won 6 and 2 in each of these states, respectively. BSP offered support to the Congress when it falls short of the majority by one seat in Rajasthan and by two seats in Madhya Pradesh.
A nationwide protest was held by Dalit groups across the country against the alleged dilution of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act by the Supreme Court, which witnessed massive violence in different parts of the country leading to the death of nine people.
