Bangladesh’s “Mother of Humanity”, Sheikh Hasina won a historic fourth term as Prime Minister in Sunday’s elections. Hasina’s father was Bangladesh's first president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who was assassinated by a group of renegade military officers in August 1975. She started her political career as a hero of the people. She returned from exile in 1981 as a leader of the Awami League and begin a long struggle to restore democracy in Bangladesh.

The credit for impressive economic growth of the South Asian nation that was more commonly known for its frequent floods and cyclones is given to 71 years old Hasina. Awami League party led by Hasina and its allies won 288 seats in the 300-seat parliament, with the main opposition securing only 6 seats, Election Commission secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed said. Hasina defeated an alliance led by the Bangladesh National Party, which urged the country’s election commission to void the results.

On the one hand, Hasina has her fans because of her giving shelter to Rohingya refugees while on the other hand, she is criticized by many. She has been accused of jailing arch-foe Khaleda Zia on politically motivated charges, of orchestrating mass arrests, enforced disappearances and passing draconian anti-press freedom laws to try to cling to power.
