President Michael D Higgins formally signed the abortion referendum bill, in which 66.4% voted Yes, into law on Tuesday which made the abortion legal and free up to 12 weeks of pregnancy. The law came after several demonstrations and staging of protests for the same. It was passed after hours of debate and several amendments. The Prime Minister of Ireland Leo Varadkar told the Irish Parliament, Dáil that legislation would formally come in the first week of October. Further, the website of the Irish Department of Health and Health Service Executive was also updated to included information on the newly available services. Before such law, it was near total ban on abortion in Ireland.
The Washington Post states that there are only 60 countries in the world which provide legalizes the abortion. In the same report, it also states that there are 28 countries that changed their abortion laws to make it easier for women to make their own choices. Unfortunately, there are still 26 countries which ban abortion altogether, including Northern Ireland.
In India, abortion is legal since1971 through the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act. The provisions of Act provide that the foetus can only be removed till the 20th week of pregnancy. However, it is mandatory for a woman to consult a medical practitioner, where the desertion of such practitioner would be final.
