In a rally of Gurdaspur, Prime Minister Narendra Modi accused the Congress of defending those who were involved in 1984 anti-Sikh riots. He said that such protectors are now rewarded the post of chief ministers. He also hit the newly appointed Chief Minister Kamal Nath of deceiving farmers with loan waiver promises by handing out lollipops to them. He said that Congress has fooled the country with slogans such as Garibi hatao. He further said that Congress looted the country by such slogans and now it is looting the nation by fake loan waiver policies. PM Modi alleged that
He alleged that the case files of the culprits were kept under wraps on the suggestion of ‘one family’. He said, “it was made up of people, who even today oppose the raising of Vande Mataram and Bharat Mata ki Jai slogans”. He further added that Punjab and the entire nation should beware of such people. The planned corridor between a gurdwara in India and a Sikh shrine in Kartarpur was also addressed by PM Modi. He also took a jibe at Congress leader Sajjan Kumar, who was recently convicted in a 1984 riots case while saying that his case files were closed by a particular family but was brought to the book by the NDA government and after the formation of a SIT, it is now pretty evident that who is the faulting party.
Kamal Nath was indicted by the Nanavati Commission for his role in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots but charges against him were dropped due to lack of evidence. He had also declined the charges against him saying that the allegations are false and he had nothing to do with the riots.
