Department of Defense chief of staff Kevin Sweeney resigned from his post, a month after the Defense Secretary announced his departure from the department. Rear Admiral Sweeney is the third senior Pentagon official who has announced his resignation after US President Donald Trump has said that US troops would be removed from Syria. Dates and plan for removal have not been finalized.
Rear Admiral said “the time is right to return to the private sector”. He had held his position for two years from January 2017. In a terse resignation letter, he said “After two years in the Pentagon, I've decided the time is right to return to the private sector. It has been an honour to serve again alongside the men and women of the Department of Defence.” But he made no mention of President Trump in the letter.
Initially he planned to hold his position till February but this announcement came early, days after General Mattis left his post. Analysts say that the resignation of senior official raises the uncertainty around the Trump’s administration and foreign policies since the announcement of plan to withdraw the US troops from Syria. Sweeney has hinted upon the policy differences with the President in his letter. On Tuesday, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will embark on a week-long tour of the Middle East designed to reassure allies in the region.
