China, which has over 20 million of Muslim population living in it, passed a law with an objective to "sinicise" the Islamic religion within next five years. This is China’s new move to control the religion in modern politics. Under President Xi Jinping, China has cracked down heavily on the religions, especially on Islam which is being practiced by most of the Uighurs in the Xinjiang province of China. Beijing suspects that the province has the separatist and extremist tendencies.

"China passed a five-year plan to Sinicise Islam at a meeting on Saturday with representatives from China's eight Islamic associations," said a report in the Global Times. "During the meeting, participants agreed to guide Islam to be compatible with socialism and implement measures to Sinicise the religion. This is China's important act to explore ways of governing religion in modern countries," the report said.

Over 20 million Muslims are living currently in China. Islam is one of the five officially recognized religions of China. Other four are: Taoism, Buddhism, Catholicism and Protestantism.

China is an atheist country and top officials of it have often equated the religion with a mental disease which needs to be cured. China has faced heavy criticism from the international community for detaining over 1 million Uighurs in indoctrination camps of Xinxiang. Earlier, China has taken heavy measures to confiscate the copies of Quran from Muslims and forcing them to not to grow beard and choose “too Islamic” names.

"Governing religion is a common challenge faced by all modern countries. The main purpose of China's five-year plan to sinicise Islam is to seek governance that tallies with Chinese practice, and it is not only limited to Islam.", said a report of Global Times.
