A study by the University of Georgia has shown how sharing tourism experiences on social media influences how people select destinations. In today's world,  it is about getting the ‘likes’ on their destination photos rather than the will to explore or the very experience itself. People do it for their Facebook profile rather than for the actual experience. If they are going somewhere interesting they are required to post a photo online as evidence of their experience.  Researches have shown that when people plan their journey they plan according to their social status. This is more likely to be true because a vacation is a leisure activity, out of the normal day-to-day working. Everyone works for leisure, which is interrelated to the status of earning.  The choices become more complex as the poorer people will miss out the opportunities because of the payroll. People make choices according to their rational and habitual. Their styles are dependent on their lifestyle and money they earn. This will not be said showing off rather than the money they earn for leisure beings.

Coming to the report from Georgia University, 75% of the Indian people who took the polls chose status symbol as a better criteria than discovering something authentic to the local destination for travel. The survery also reported that Indians also seem most tempted by nostalgia as 80 percent of those surveyed travel to 'rediscover past good times', 79 percent 'to experience a simpler lifestyle' and 76 percent 'to get away from the demands at home', while for 75 percent its about 'going to places where their friends have not been to. 

While the rich may have always set the standards, the actual social competition used to be played out largely at the neighborhood level, among people in roughly the same class. In recent years as people have become increasingly isolated from their neighbors, a media barrage celebrating the toys and totems of the rich has fostered a whole new level of desire across class groups.
