A 33-year old woman, Maheshwari Chowdhary, fell prey to the medical negligence of doctors in Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), Hyderabad. During her operation for a hernia on 2nd November 2018, the doctors left a pair of forceps in her abdomen. Three months after her surgery, she complained of severe abdominal pain and the matter came to light when her X-ray report revealed a pair of forceps was embedded in her stomach. She has now been admitted for another surgery. The patient’s relatives lodged a complaint at the Punjagutta police station and protested outside the hospital. NIMS Director, K. Manohar said, “the patient was discharged on November 12 Today (Saturday) she was admitted to the hospital after she complained of abdominal pain and the X-ray report revealed there is an artery forceps in her abdomen. We have ordered an inquiry by a three-member team and will take action after we get the final report.” He said that such an incident had happened for the first time in the last thirty years. The inquiry team comprises medical superintendent, dean and a surgical gastroenterologist from Osmania Hospital.
