Google has designed an Android app named Bolo which helps to improve both English and Hindi reading skills of kids and therefore, encouraging them to read aloud. The app is designed for primary grade children. Google said it would not collect any data on children through the app and it would not have any advertisement. If a child finds a word hard to pronounce, Diya automatically detects that and helps them out before proceeding with the rest of the story. Google has partnered with Storyweaver.org.in for content, which includes 50 stories in Hindi and 40 in English. No name, age, gender is needed nor is a Gmail account needed to sign in. The app is also ad-free. With the help of ASER Centre, the tech giant piloted the new Bolo app across 200 villages in Uttar Pradesh over the past few months. The Bolo app does not require more than 50MB of storage space on a Smartphone. While the literacy rate varies between states in India due to limited access to "quality material", insufficient resources, and other challenges that children face, Google believes that the new Bolo app will help them at least improve their reading skills. "We are now actively working with a number of nonprofit partners to take it to more people across the country who could benefit from it", Nitin Kashyap, Product Manager, Google India said in a press statement. The company's aiming to reach more children across India. It works completely offline, making it ideal for use in rural areas with poor mobile connectivity, and comes with a friendly voice assistant to guide kids through the included lessons aimed at primary grade students.
