Supreme Court on Friday issued notices to the Centre and the Delhi government when 6 run away couples approached the Delhi Women Commission for seeking safety and security after facing threats to their life from their families and fear of becoming victims of honor killing. The bench headed by justice AK Sikri issued notices on a petition moved by Delhi commission for Women through its Chairperson Swati Jaihind on behalf of 6 runaway couples who have been facing serious threat and are in the care and custody of the commission. In the petition, commission sought to know if the directives passed by the Supreme Court against honor killing in year 2018 in the case of Shakti Vahini v/s Union of India, authorizing local police to act against Khap gatherings and to protect the couples by providing security and safety house are applicable everywhere, irrespective of the states. The DCW in its petition also asked the court to direct the centre, Delhi government and commissioner of police to provide safety house and custody to these 6 runaway couple. It also prayed to the court to ensure that the directions passed in Shakti vahini case are implemented too.
