On Tuesday, Syria urged the United Nations Security Council to hold an urgent meeting on the US controversial decision that recognizes the occupied Golan Heights as Israeli territory. President Donald Trump signed a proclamation on Monday which recognizes Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights. The signing ceremony took place at the White House during Trump’s talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the ceremony was broadcasted live by the US news channels. Syria had asked for an urgent meeting to discuss the situation in the occupied Syrian Golan. Syria had also sent a letter calling the recent actions as “flagrant violation of the relevant Security Council’s resolution by a permanent member-state (US)”.
The Golan Heights had belonged to Syria since 1944, but during the 1967 war between Syria and Israel, the Golan Heights were seized by Israel. After which, the Israeli Parliament had passed a law unilaterally declaring sovereignty over the Golan Heights in 1981. The UN Security Council declared the seizure of Golan Heights as null and void in its Resolution 497 on December 17, 1981. But, Israel still continues to occupy two-thirds of the wider Golan Heights region.
While signing the proclamation, Trump said that. “Today, aggressive action by Iran and terrorist groups in Southern Syria, including Hezbollah, continue to make the Golan Heights a potential launching ground for attacks against Israel-very violent attacks” and continued “Today I am taking historic action to promote Israel’s ability to defend itself and have a powerful national security which they are entitled to have”. This decision of President Donald Trump is not only being opposed by just Syria, many other countries like Russia, Germany, and the Arab League and by some key European Union members. The countries have voiced their concern that such a decision will undoubtedly have negative consequences in the Middle East.
