Election Commission served a notice to the Doordarshan News Channel over unfair allocation of air time coverage provided to the recognised political parties. The Election Commission freshly issued a notice to the news broadcasting channel doordarshan giving preferably 160 hours long coverage time to the Bhartiya Janata Party while on the other side another recognised party known as Congress got only half of the time provided that is, 80 hours which in a way was against the model code of conduct. The inappropriate distribution led to the infringement of principle of maintaining neutrality and a level playing field.
The news channel telecasted the show called “Main bhi chowkidar” for almost one hour against the other political parties took cognizance and approached the apex election organising body. Further the parties alleged that after the Lok sabha elections were announced the BJP got more time on the news coverage followed by congress party.
Acting on this issue, the Election Commission wrote a strong worded to the Secretary of Information and Broadcasting Ministry instructing them to abstain from providing the favour in the form of long air time coverage on their channel which was directly leading to the transgression of principle of maintaining neutrality and a level playing field. The Election Commission strongly instructed the Information and Broadcasting Ministry to refrain from giving any predilection to any political party. The CEO of Prasar Bharti said that broadcasting is an uninterrupted process spanning the complete network of more than 30 TV channels and around 100 radio stations. So, it would be unreasonable to reach on conclusion from a snapshot. But the CEO assured that they will act on the observations of EC.
