  • The study was conducted by Researchers from the University of Queensland, Australia
  • People shun public transport as they think that it depicts your social status
  • Most people generalize those who travel by their own cars or bikes as rich people and those who use the bus as poor people

Researchers from the University of Queensland, Australia gathered information by interviewing people from Asian countries such as India and China on the frequency of usage of public transport. They concluded that people are reluctant to use public transport because even those who cannot afford cars and bikes, feel that using public transport will reduce their prospects of marriage or a successful business. People shun public transport as they think that it depicts your social status. Most people generalize those who travel by their own cars or bikes as rich people and those who use the bus as poor people. This is the main problem that must be solved as we live in a world of non- renewable and rapidly depleting resources and that must be prioritized.

However, residents of populated and congested cities in China and India such as Beijing, Bangalore, Chennai, etc. will be better off using public transport than other modes as the quality of air and water due to the increase in the number of vehicles and traffic has led to the deterioration of life and health. Thus, public transport must be popularised as this will save these countries from a lot of irreparable damage.
