HIGHLIGHTS

  • With the World Environment Day round the corner, the UNEP has stated Air Pollution to be a silent killer
  • Adoption of the 4 R’s namely: reduce, recycle, reuse and recover is being urged by the UNEP
  • The report shows India as a highly vulnerable country

The world environment day is not too far from now and in the wake of the same, the UNEP has stated that dirty air hurts the poorest of the lot the most as 91% of premature deaths result due to air pollution in low and middle-income countries. The theme of this year’s environment day is “Air Pollution”. UNEP in its latest report has said that the mortality rate attributed to Air Pollution was the highest with 187 and 170 deaths per lakh of population in ‘Sub-Sahara Africa’ and “Central Africa’, respectively. It is of prominent importance for the Indian economy that India features in the ‘Central & Southern Asia’ sustainable development goals regional grouping.

The report shows India as a highly vulnerable country. Due to poverty, use of polluting technologies and fuels that gives rise to harmful gases, sorry state of affairs of pollution control in SSI’s, India is expected to be burdened with various diseases caused by Air Pollution. Moreover, the Sub-Sahara African region consists of all the poor countries which are either underdeveloped or developing. With an increased level of malnutrition and poor health status of the people across the globe, the risk to public health is expected to increase by a greater margin.

The report gives an important implication that the deaths caused due to Air Pollution in richer nations are comparatively lesser when compared with death caused in poorer nations.
