HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Competition Commission of India has directed a probe into Google’s alleged abuse of Android to block its rivals
  • The Anti-trust watchdog had already started looking into grievances being quite similar to one which the giant search engine faced in Europe
  • CCI termed the actions of Google as unfair business activity

Last year Google had suffered a fine amounting to 4.34 billion euro. Last month in mid-April, the antitrust watchdog found merits in the complaints made over to them and relying on those merits had directed its investigation team to probe into the matters of concern. As per CCI officials, they believe that Google has abused its position. And giving due weight age to what had happened last year in Europe, they consider it as a strong case to proceed against the renowned search engine. Executives of Google are likely to be served summons in order to appear and show cause. The investigation will most likely complete in a year’s time.

On the other hand, Google through its spokesperson made a counter statement and highlighted the advantages of Android as to how it enables everybody to stay connected over the internet and as to how competition and innovation are on a rise due to the coming of Android in the international market.

Last year in the case of EU, reports show that Google had coerced all the manufacturers to pre-install its tools such as the search engine, Play store and Chrome browser on all android devices, serving the giant search engine an unfair advantage over its competitors. This was criticized by the CCI as it termed the above actions of Google as unfair business activity.
