A University Grants Commission (UGC) mandate to varsities and their affiliated colleges to encourage student to sing Mahatma Gandhi's bhajans, similar to Vaishnava Jana To, on their grounds from October 2 to 9 has divided the academic community in the state. The event is in remembrance of the Father of the Nation's 150th birth commemoration. The UGC circular says bhajans can be sung in various dialects on the lines of "mile sur mera tumhara". In any case, a segment of academic and student has portrayed the move as shallow. 

Varadesh Hiregange, director, Gandhian and Peace Studies, Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), said this is a bureaucratised method for celebrating Gandhi Jayanti. "He and his thoughts should be considered more important, than simply being constrained to plays and singing bhajans on his commemoration. There ought to have been an intellectual engagement of students. There is where he rattled off numerous valuable constructive exercises, as Swachh Bharat that could realize societal change.
