The Department of Science and Technology (DST) has proposed a policy named the Scientific Research Infrastructure Management and Networks (SRIMAN) which allows scientific instruments in government labs to give on rent. This policy will allow researchers to hire scientific instruments on rent that cost more than ?10 lakhs. This idea will create a great revenue form the rental income.
The Department of Science and Technology (DST) put a note on the website that says, “To promote ease of access, sharing, and monitoring, the granting agencies will henceforth tabulate and put all types of equipment funded by it costing more than ?10 lakh on the internet, to be accessed by researchers”.
This policy is open for public comment for one month. Department mentioned that this policy would not apply to strategic sectors for now.
This initiative will be helpful in research as well as in creating revenues for the institutions. All the expensive equipment remain idle in laboratories for many years and this policy will be helpful in the use of these expensive pieces of equipment.
All details about the equipment will be on the website and those who want to use it have to apply for it by mentioning time and purpose. After paying the given fee for this they would be able to access the instruments. Presently this process is available for very expensive equipment such as radio telescopes and particle-accelerators which cost crores of rupees.
