Benefit to India
As a matter of fact, India has sent more than 2000000 soldiers to UN Peacekeeping missions since the institution's inception. India is the first country to contribute to the Trust Fund against sexual exploitation. India has sent its soldiers to 49 out of 71 peacekeeping missions. There are various reasons for the above-mentioned facts. First, at a micro-individual-level, peacekeeping missions provide employment to quite a few numbers. Secondly, it is highly beneficial for India as it improves its image as a deserving world-class leader. The second point is of importance here, since it furthers India’s cause for a seat in the UN Security Council. It depicts India’s commitment towards humanity at all levels. It is not just about leadership, but it depicts India’s commitment to ideals which are responsible for bringing in the idea of India, itself, and those very same ideas are responsible for India’s existence.
Legal Basis for the UN peacekeeping missions
United Nations started its peacekeeping operations from the year 1948. The peacekeeping missions are administered by Security Council and are part and parcel of their Security Councils responsibility. As far as the legal basis, for these peacekeeping missions are concerned, Chapter VI and Chapter VII can be used for studying for forming an overview of measures that can be taken by Security Council. But these articles are more in the nature of guidance and cannot act as a restraint over the power of Security Council since Security Council’s prime objective is to ensure that matters are resolved through in peaceful manners. It means that the general power with Security Council is broader in nature. What I mean to say is that Security Council will take action if any of the situations mentioned in the above-mentioned chapter is violated but they can also cat on such acts and with such measures which are not explicitly mentioned in the Charter, with the exception that Security Council cannot itself violate what it stands for, example, ordering a killings of a tribe (read genocide) which is posing imminent threat or committing crimes against another tribe. UN peacekeeping missions are part of this responsibility which is cast on the Security Council due to its existence.
