A petition was filed recently on the appointment of President’s Body Guard (PBG). The said petition challenged the recruitment process of PBGs claiming the same as discrimination, since ‘preferential treatment’ has been given to three castes- Jats, Sikhs and Rajputs and that it deprives other citizens from appointment.
Gaurav Yadav, a 19 year old who filed this petition, had tried to join PBG and serve the nation. However, he soon was disappointing learning that citizens of only these 3 castes are given jobs and since Yadav was an Ahir, he was not given the job. The Delhi HC has now sought answers from both Centre and Army Chief.
It can be seen that a similar PIL was filed in 2012 and 2017 challenging the army recruitment process and PBG recruitment respectively. The SC however had dismissed the PILs questioning how a PIL can be entertained against the Head of the Republic- the President himself. The RTI also revealed that only the three castes become PGBs, having 33.1% share. However, the army still alleges there is no caste discrimination in the 2017 PIL. Yet, it had accepted to there being such division in the 2012 petition, an irony indeed!
