As the Congress win in Karnataka 2018 elections, it gave rise to an unlikely coalition which is at the epicenter of the current political crisis in the state. The crisis deepened when two weeks ago when Congress MLAs were rounded by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in a bid to topple the seven-month-old JD(S)-Congress government. After the last year's drama in Karnataka during post-election involving the Congress, the JD(S) and the BJP, there is a visible new drama as three influential Congress MLAs were found in a Mumbai hotel where a few BJP leaders were also camping. Sadananda Gowda, former Karnataka chief minister who is also a BJP leader, said that due to the incapacity of Congress in keeping its MLAs in Karnataka together, it is only pin-pointing at the BJP party.
Karnataka CM HD Kumaraswamy mentioned that he was aware of MLAs traveling to Mumbai city as they traveled after informing him only. He was in constant touch with the MLAs. He added that he knew whom the BJP was trying to contact and what is being offered to him. The BJP will have a strong chance of getting the lead in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections if they are capable of cracking the rocky coalition.
A wider rift from within the government came to the forefront when Congress tried troubleshooting mechanism to handle the crisis. Many media reports have said that that the entire fiasco was fomented due to Congress' internal politics. Buoyant by internal squabble, the BJP accelerated its 'poach MLAs' plan and called it the 'Operation Lotus'.
