There is an inverse relationship between the soil of the land and the summer season of Rajasthan. Due to the shortage of water in the region it not only adds to the anguish among the people but also affects the economy of the region as in employment options dry up, purchasing power priority (PPP) of the people decreases andthe migration ofthe habitats start to the neighbouring states like Gujarat, Maharashtra etc for their survival. The state government declared over 5000 villages in nine districts in Rajasthan-Barmer, Churu, Pali, Bikaner, Jaisalmer, Jalor, Jodhpur, Hanumangarh and Nagaur as drought affected even before the onset of summer.
Around five years ago, there were a tiny row of houses dot the arid landscape of Rakhi village in Barmer district of the pink city i.e Jaipur, Rajasthan. The houses uproar with the activities which involved the time for women to gather the well to draw water and chat about their day, the men for a round of hookah, and kids to fight over and have discussion as to who won the last cricket match.Seasonal migration being part of life, people would migrate to other states after the kharif season would end-around October-and return during the rains in July.
According to sarpanch of the Rakhi village in Siwana block of the drought-hit Barmer district around 250 of 1800 families left the village. Not only the people of the Barmer villages are forced to migrate but also in many other districts in west rajasthan due to the situation of drought. The elderly people from eastern plains of rajasthan have locked their homes and moved to other states like Haryana in search of livelihood. The drought has affected the livestock and the income opportunities of the people to wider extent. As drought-hit families move away to different part of India, they give boost the economy of these states.Working on a daily wages provides almost no relief to families trying to escape drought, as they often reel under cash crunch and finally end up in poverty. The immigrants have to battle for their basic human rights in this state.
