The 124th constitutional amendment provided for 10 percent Economically Weaker Section (EWS) reservation for jobs and education. The central government has instructed all centrally funded educational institutions to follow this. The EWS quota includes those who are not covered under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (ST/ST) quota or the Other Backward Classes (OBC) quota. Only those families whose gross annual income is below 8 lakh from the general category can avail of these benefits. However, those families that own 5 acres of land or more or a residential flat of 1,000 square feet or more or a residential plot of 200 square yards or more will not be eligible for reservation.
In light of this development, IIM-N has increased its seats to 130 from 120 for this academic year 2020-21. 60 are open for the general category, 36 for OBC, 20 for SC, 10 for ST and 4 for EWS with 7 seats for differently abled people across all categories. This is being implemented by providing the shortlisted candidates with a format that ensures that their family's income, assets, and earnings are declared. These are the essentials that enable one to avail EWS reservation. The educational portal set up by the institution also allows them to upload their certificates to prove all of the above-mentioned criteria.
The income must be given along with their source such as agriculture, business, profession, etc. for the year prior to application to IIM-N.
