The chief military rebel who led a thwarted coup was arrested and two of his commandos were killed after they stormed into a public radio station. “The situation is under control” government spokesman told a reporter describing the coup as “a flash in the pan”.

"The government and institutions are functioning normally, and people are going about their daily lives," spokesman said, adding that four of the five mutineers had been arrested and a fifth one was "on the run". Hostages were also freed from the radio station.  An AFP respondent reported earlier Monday that the shots were fired near the radio station at the centre of Libreville, capital of the oil-rich country.

In a radio message broadcast at 4:30 am, the rebellious soldiers called on the people of Gabon to rebel against the ailing President Ali Bongo. The President is currently recovering from stroke in Morocco. A video was also circulated in the social media wherein soldiers were described themselves as a patriotic movement and were wearing their military fatigues and green berets. Their leader read out their statement, "If you are eating, stop; if you are having a drink, stop; if you are sleeping, wake up. Wake up your neighbors... rise up as one and take control of the street." The government spokesman later declared their leader as the fugitive leader.

African Union chief Moussa Faki Mahamat has strongly condemned the coup and wrote on Twitter “I reaffirm the AU's total rejection of all unconstitutional change of power.”
