Girish Karnad, a famous playwright, actor, and filmmaker had passed away at the age of 81 at Bangalore hospital. The news of his demise was known from his staff from Cubbon Park Police Station where he is living. He was suffering from illness for a long time leading to his demise on Monday.
Girish was a Rhodes Scholar from Oxford University and he earned his Master of Arts in History, Political Science and Economics. He was also a recipient of the Highest Literary Award in India which is Jnanpith Award along with this he was conferred with Padma Shri in the year 1974 and Padma Bhushan in 1992. He was mainly known as Kannada playwright, many of his works were translated into English and other Indian Languages. He was significantly worked in South India Cinema and Bollywood. Some of his Hindi movies are Manthan, Swami, Nishaant, and Pukar. He was also worked in many of Nagesh Kukunoor films. He also acted in Tiger Zinda Hai.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on learning of the sad demise of Girish, tweeted, “Girish Karnad will be remembered for his versatile acting across all mediums. He also spoke passionately on causes dear to him. His works will be popular in the following years to come. Saddened by his demise. May his soul rest in peace.“
