A 60-year old farmer Shivappa, from Sagar in Kalaburgi District got excited when Karnataka Government deposited money into his account as a part of the state’s farm loan waiver promise on April. 2019. But on June 3, which is weeks after the results of Lok Sabha Elections have been declared, the money has disappeared from his bank account. He rushed to the bank to find out what happened and he was told that the money has been refunded to the state government.
Shivappa has given a statement that “on February 28, the government has deposited Rs. 50,000 in my bank account. And on April 17 Rs 43,535 was deposited in my bank account. With all of this, I got so happy and excited that my loan will be waived. Suddenly the money disappeared. The total amount of Rs 93,535 has vanished from my bank account on 2 and 3 June." When he got to the bank the bank said that the state government has issued a notice to all banks to refund the loan waiver amount back to the state government.
According to Farmers Organization, it’s not just Shivappa but over 13,000 farmers across the state have been deprived of the loan waiver amount scheme. Farmers have alleged the government that the scheme was only an eyewash to win votes of the people.
