The environment of Hong Kong was violent with clashes due to political unrest caused by China Extradition Bill that have provisions for handing over criminals in Hong Kong to China. Police in order to stop the protesters, who are trying to attack Parliament and are blocking roads, used tear gas and rubber Bullets to stop them. Thousands of people surrounded the parliament and demanded lawmakers to stop discussion on the proposed law.
Carie Lam, Hong Kong Chief Executive who is endorsing the passage of the protested Bill, said that these are “Organised riots“and they need to be calmed down. In a video, she said that the rioting actions that damage peaceful society, ignoring law and discipline are unacceptable for any civilized society.
The people who are involved in the protests are mostly young people asking to remove the Beijing-backed Law. These clashes remind of 2014 pro-democracy “Occupy Movement“ where people fought for democratic rights, shut down the city for two months fighting against the police but didn’t receive any concession from Beijing government. While the police are trying to stop protesters, the young demonstrators revolted back with bricks, metal poles, and bottles. Authorities have reported that 22 people were injured in the clash. Analyst Dixon explaining the violence involved in the riot said: “In terms of the level of violence, today has been the most serious since 1997."
