A condensed poppy crop over an extended area near the chandgam high school in Pulwama of South Kashmir has caused the trouble to the teachers. They dread that the crops, which are located only a few yards away from the school, could attract teenage students towards misuse of drugs. In the past fortnight, officials have destroyed poppy crops spread over hundreds of acres of land, but still, there is broad region covered with the prohibited crop.
Javed Ahmad, a faculty in Chandgam High school stated that the governmental authorities should confiscate the land on which the crop is cultivated. They have been lagging in their efforts to limit the cultivation. The crop should have been eradicated months back. Local civilians said that farmers trade dried poppy to drug traders in the neighboring state of Punjab who buys from the farmers of Kashmir. Pulwama’s hospital Medical superintendent Dr. Abdul Rashid Para said that the officialdom is planning to start a drug de-addiction center as misuse of substance has become a matter of concern among youth.
Civilians said that this crop is cultivated once in a year and the seeds are scattered at the end of autumn. The poppy crop is harvested towards the close of May. In the year 2019, the officialdom accepted, the drive to demolish the crop in Kashmir region was halted in the wake of tussles amid security forces and youth prior to and during the parliamentary elections.
