The District and Sessions Court of Pathankot has pronounced six out of eight accused including the temple priest Sanjhi Ram guilty in the case rape and murder of an eight-year-old nomadic girl in Kathua. Vishal the seventh accused and son of Sanjhi Ram, was acquitted for the want of evidence. And the fate of the eighth accused who was Sanjhi Ram’s Minor nephew is yet to be decided by the Juvenile Court. The Court convicted the three prime accused to life imprisonment and other three accused were convicted to 5 years imprisonment.
The charge sheet has said that the girl had gone missing while grazing horses. Investigators have said the accused Juvenile had abducted the girl in the pretext of helping her find her horses. The abduction, rape, and killing of the child was part of a carefully planned strategy to remove the minority nomadic community from the area.
The in-camera trial in the case ended on June 3, that has been benched by the District and Sessions Court Judge Tajwinder Singh had announced that the verdict was likely to be delivered on June 10. The Crime Branch has arrested village head, Sanjhi Ram, his son Vishal, his Juvenile nephew and his friend Anand Dutta, and two special police officers Deepak Khajuria and Surender Verma. Head constable Tilak Raj and Sub-inspector Anand Dutta, who allegedly took Rs. 4 Lakhs from Sanjhi Ram and destroyed the important evidence were also arrested.
