The Supreme Court of India has issued a notice against the former managing trustee of Tata Trusts, R Venkatramanan, on an appeal made by the Shapoorji Pallonji Group challenging the quashing of Defamation case against him. A bench, which was being held by Chief Justice of India, Justice Ranjan Gogoi, said that it was just a corporate war. Senior Advocate, Mahesh Jethmalani has appeared for the Shapoorji Pallonji Group, argued that the defamation complaint filed by the firm was wrongfully quashed by the Bombay High Court.
The Bombay High Court quashed the appeal of Defamation made on the complaint filed by the Shapoorji Pallonji Group against Venkatramanan. The Court ruled that the press note dated on 30 May 2018, which was issued by Venkatramanan did not amount to Defamation. In a complaint made by Shapoorji Pallonji Group, it has been stated that the group owns 18.6% stake in the Tata group along with the allegation that Venkatramanan made certain comments on the press note, which were true and defamatory in nature to the group. The Bombay High Court quashed the appeal by stating that the words that are used in the press note were not defamatory, rather they are moderate and temperate.
