Despite laws that aim to create equality, the caste system in India continues to have a strong impact on society. The Allahabad High Court ordered to grant police protection to the daughter of Bareilly’s Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) of Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP), who had married outside her caste. Sakshi Mishra, daughter of BJP MLA Rajesh Mishra, who is from a Brahmin family married Ajitesh Kumar, who belongs to a Dalit Community. The couple also sought help by taking recourse to social media by uploading a video on the whole incident and asking the MLA and his goons to keep away from interfering in their married life. Sakshi and Ajitesh had approached the High Court stating that they were facing continuous threats from Bareilly’s MLA Rajesh Mishra for marrying outside caste against their wishes. The couple had prayed that police or Mishra should not disturb them in their peaceful living as they were adult, and had got married with free will. The Court relied upon the judgments of the Supreme Court, which held that caste groups cannot interfere with an adult’s choice of his life partner.
