Equations can be fraught with anxiety between a former captain and his successor, particularly if the two gentlemen still play together. However, for M.S. Dhoni and Virat Kohli, for his grace and camaraderie, the passing of the baton was noteworthy.
Kohli paid tribute to his predecessor, who remains an inspiration and a sounding board for the present Indian skipper, with Dhoni playing his last World Cup, and the present edition approaching its peak over the weekend.
Speaking to the press on Monday at Old Trafford in Manchester, Kohli said: "The respect will always be there for us, who began our careers under him, because of the possibilities he offered us, and the faith he reposed in us, and how he treated the entire squad in transition. Now we are the ones that advance Indian cricket. You must understand and recognize when an individual accomplished so much for the team. Regarding MS, it will always be sky-high.
Kohli described another critical facet—the capacity of Dhoni to step back and give room: "I understand how hard a shift from being a captain to being just a player in the same squad can be. In anything, he's not too assertive or pushy. He provides you room to make your own choices and explore yourself, which was his greatest quality. Simultaneously, if I go and ask him anything, he gives me advice. I'm pleased I've been able to play with him for so many years.
