A suo moto petition on child rape cases was heard by the bench consisting of Hon’ble Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Aniruddha Bose and Justice Deepak Gupta. The Bench appointed Mr V Giri Senior Advocate as Amicus curiae in this respect, and he had to work with the court to ensure the swift disposal of cases. According to the data submitted by the Supreme Court to the Amicus Curiae, 24,212 FIRs were filed only between January and July, which includes probe and trial stage cases.
Out of all 24,212 cases, the country disposed of only 911 cases, which is an average of less than 4% of the total. The state of Uttar Pradesh has the highest number of FIRs filed which comes to 3457, and the state disposed of 3% of the cases. Further, the state of Chandigarh has 29 FIRs filed, and the state disposed of 12 cases, estimated at 41%, which is the highest disposal rate. More than seventeen states and Union Territories have not disposed of a single case concerning the data provided by the Hon’ble Supreme Court.
