Following the Supreme Court’s decision to demolish the 15th Century Guru Ravidas temple in Delhi, the believers and followers of Ravidassia Community, a prominent Punjabi Dalit community has called for a complete ‘Bandh’ across the State on Aug 13. As a result, a complete shutdown of shops, commercial establishments, schools and colleges occurred in districts of Jalandhar, Patiala, Barnala, Fazilka, Samana, Ferozepur, Moga, Hoshiarpur and Kapurthala.

As members held protests and staged dharnas, traffic too was disrupted along the Jalandhar-Delhi National Highway. Though the community said the protest will be peaceful, some 32,000 police personnel will be deployed for security. Meanwhile, Railways also terminated sevice of all Punjab-bound trains at Ambala on Tuesday.

The Punjab CM  Capt. Amarinder Singh has sought PM’s intervention to resolve the matter at the earliest possible. The 500 – year old temple was constructed on the land given by Lodhi dynasty to the community which is now claimed to be that of Delhi Development Authority[DDA].The Shiromani Akali Dal accused the Aravind Kejriwal- led AAP for not supporting the community’s cause seriously and also deceived them. The SAD will take initiative to construct the temple at an alternate site with available fund, said its legislator, Pawan Kumar Tinu. The CM also held talks with Union Urban development Minister Hardeep Singh Puri regarding the site so that the community can rebuild its temple. The CM has also urged the community to keep its calm till a solution is arrived at.

As 32% of the electorate consists of this community, they are an influential vote bank in Punjab backed by both the Congress and Akali Dal. By observing Aug 15 as black day and by protesting at Jantar Mantar at Aug 21, they will go on if their demands are not met.
