A recent case in the High Court of Madras took place of a man named Vivekananda Kumar. He died near MGR Bridge after falling from his bike because a police officer hit him with a lathi.
A petition was filed in the Madras High Court by his wife seeking appropriate compensation and employment in a government organisation. The petitioner said that her husband was struck on the chest by the policeman due to which he fell backwards and suffered severe injuries on his head. She said that her husband succumbed to his injuries on the next day at the hospital. She blamed the police for the death of her husband and said that the police who were present at the place of incident could have acted swiftly and should have rushed him to a nearby hospital without wasting valuable time.
Due to the death of the husband of V. Gajapriya, it has become hard for her to meet the needs of her family where there is a minor son, an unstable mother and her father-in-law. As Vivekananda Kumar was the only sole earner of their family she filed this petition. She therefore has approached the Court to ask for the compensation of Rs 50 lakh and also asked to give her employment in a government based department which would help her meet the daily needs of her family.
It was further held that, the Judge ordered a notice to the Home Secretary of Madurai and the head constable was placed under suspension. Later, the case was adjourned for four weeks.
