A Delhi Court on Wednesday sent Former Finance Minister, P. Chidambaram to judicial custody for 14 days till November 13 in connection with the INX Media money laundering case filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). The ED has sought one more day for custodial interrogation, but Special Judge Ajay Kumar Kuhar dismissed the plea of the ED saying that sufficient time was given to the investigating agency for interrogation.
The judge said that the accused can be questioned by investigators and confronted with evidences even in judicial custody.
The Court directed Tihar jail authorities to provide Chidambaram with medicines, western toilet, security and separate cell. It also said that the Chidambaram has also been allowed to have home-cooked food considering his medical condition.
Chidambaram was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on August 21 in the INX Media corruption case. And he is currently under the ED custody in a related money laundering case.
On 15 May, 2017, the CBI had registered an FIR alleging irregularities in a Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance granted to the INX Media Group for receiving overseas funds of Rs. 305 crores in 2007, during Chidambaram’s tenure as Finance Minister.
Thereafter, the ED filed a money laundering case in this regard in 2017.
The ED had taken Chidambaram into custody on October 16, 2019.
