A man etched in history for not only his incredible voice but also his larger than life personality is Freddie Mercury. This man took up the role of the lead vocalist of the music group Queen, only to become the one of the greatest bands of all time. Along with the lovely music falling in the opera rock, rock, and metal genres, Freddie Mercury has lived on in our lives forever.

The movie Bohemian Rhapsody, named after one of the best known songs by Queen, shows the experienced actor Rami Malek take on the role of the feisty Freddie Mercury and depict all the important milestones in his life leading up to his tragic death in 1991, at the young age of 45.

Freddie Mercury was a man way ahead of the time. His birth was in Zanzibar with the name Farrokh Bulsara. He soon shifted to the United Kingdom, uniting with the band at a time when they were all small musicians trying to earn a living out of music.

Freddie Mercury went on to become one of the best singers in the world, having performed at the largest of stadiums and sold enormous numbers of records, with various songs topping the lists in terms of popularity. Despite this level of success that Freddie Mercury had the opportunity to receive, his life was not as flowery as it seemed on the outside. A man of a few words, Freddie Mercury was riddled with problems in his personal life from the very beginning, which the biography draws attention to, thus paying homage to a legend who will always be remembered fondly.

Freddie Mercury suffered from the very beginning of his tryst with music, starting with his looks and bold appearances, showing a form of gender fluidity that the world was yet to come to terms with. Further, the band Queen was considered to be vague and too different in the sound of music, thus not being endorsed by the critics. Further, despite being largely popular amongst the audience, contrary to their image of extravagance, the band was actually duped and underpaid for the longest time, resulting in a struggle that was least expected from a band that was a big hit with the people.

A big secret that was hidden by Freddie Mercury all his life was his sexuality. Having married a woman, this man concealed his gender identity, without letting it come in the public eye that he had male partners. This secret however, cost the man his life. Freddie Mercury passed away in London, on 24th November, 1991. The cause of his death was bronchopneumonia as a result of Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS).

For a man so revered, the news of Freddie Mercury’s death came as a shock to millions of his fans all across the globe. However, his charisma made an impact so big that the name Freddie Mercury will forever be fondly remembered. His bravery for fearlessly being who he was and also being one of the first celebrities to have battled with AIDS and a different sexual orientation.

All of the above has been beautifully depicted in the movie Bohemian Rhapsody, with a flawless performance by all the actors. A special mention must be given to those who portrayed Freddie’s bandmates in the movie. The movie is definitely a must watch and a much needed memoir of a man that the people of the earth were blessed to have.
