Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, India has invited online applications for the nomination/recommendations for Padma Awards 2021 starting from May 1, 2020, to September 15, 2020, from –

  1. Sports Authority of India

  2. Indian Olympic Association

  3. National Sports Federations/Associations (1)

The above authorities may nominate a deserving sportsperson directly on the website www.padmaawards.com.

In India, the Padma Awards, which comprises of Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri, are amongst the highest civilian awards. This award, constituted in 1954, seeks to recognize, prize, and appraise a deserving citizen, for his/her distinguished and exceptional achievement/service in all fields of work, on the Republic day each year. Every citizen of India, no matter what his/her background is eligible to receive this award.

From 1954 to 2020, the various authorities have made various nominations in offline and online mode. However, from the year 2018, the government of India made nomination through online mode mandatory, in a specified format on the portal, including a citation in narrative form in not more than 800 words. The sports ministry expects the following traits from the recommendation/nomination:

  • Only true deserving candidates are worthy to receive these awards.

  • Such candidates should also have been awarded any National or State award in his/her field.

  • Talented persons irrespective of sex, race, caste, and creed should be considered.

  • Decoration should only be considered in cases of highly deserving candidates.

  • A higher category of Padma Award can be awarded to a candidate, provided 5 years have been elapsed from the date of receiving such award.

  • Government servants, except Doctors and scientists, are not eligible to receive the Padma Awards.

The Ministry has also requested other Ministries to invite applications for nominations on broad-based consideration. It has also specified in the letter that only online applications will be considered.

Analyzing the letter

The sports ministry has invited applications for the Padma Award 2021 amidst lockdown and between the ongoing pandemic. The Ministry has also attempted to expand the date of inviting the applications from May 1 to September 15, which is four and a half months. During the lockdown, the above-mentioned authorities have enough time to nominate/recommend the deserving sportsperson.

There are high chances that the coronavirus pandemic will sweep 2020 and will move to the year 2021 because of the development of the vaccine. Even if this happens, the departments will still have the chance for nominating/recommending a deserving candidate.
