Dragon privately developed spacecraft built by the American corporation SpaceX and the first private spacecraft to carry astronauts to orbit.
SpaceX Falcon 9 lifts off with NASA astronauts Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken in the Dragon crew capsule, Saturday, May 30, 2020, from the Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral, Fla.
This was the first flight of its astronauts on an American spaceship, launched on American soil, after nine years for NASA. It used to have a fleet of five spaceships under its Space Shuttle program, that were used to make a total of 135 of journeys into space, and the International Space Station (ISS), in the 30 years between 1981 and 2011. Two of these were destroyed in accidents, the Challenger in 1986 and Columbia in 2003, each resulting in the death of seven astronauts. After the 2003 accident, in which India-born astronaut Kalpana Chawla was among those killed, the US government had decided to close the Space Shuttle program.
"Dragon was huffing and puffing into orbit, and we were driving or riding a dragon up, It was not quite the same ride, the smooth ride, as the space shuttle was up to MECO [main engine cutoff] a little bit less g's but a little bit more alive is probably the best way I would describe it." Said Astronaut Robert Behnken.
Kimbal Musk, brother of Elon musk wrote in his Instagram, “Today was history in the making. Such an incredible day. I’m so proud of everyone @SpaceX@nasa, and most of all my brother.”
NASA managers have not yet decided how long Hurley and Behnken will remain in orbit. The Crew Dragon is certified for up to four months in space, but the crew could be ordered home earlier depending on how the space environment affects the capsule's solar arrays, the weather in the Atlantic Ocean splashdown zone, and other factors.
All this was a historic event on many stages for sure, especially for SpaceX.
