The American author of horror, psychological fantasy, mystery, crime, science-fiction and fantasy books, Stephen Edwin King was born on 21 September 1947. More than 350 million copies have been published in his books and many of them have been translated as films, TV shows, miniseries, and comic books. He published 61 novels, including six books on non-fiction, and seven with Richard Bachman's pen name. He wrote about 200 short stories, most of which were published in books.

King won the World Fantasy Awards, Bram Stoker Awards, and British Fantasy Society Awards. He was awarded the medal for his distinguished contribution to American Letters by the National Book Foundation in 2003. In 2004, he was also awarded the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement and the Mystery Writers 2007 Grand Master Award for his contributions to literature for all of his bibliography. He won a National Arts Medal from the United States in 2015. American Arts Endowment for his literary efforts. He was called the 'King of Horror,' a play about his surname and an indication of his pop culture of high standing.

After graduation from the University of Maine, King received a diploma to teach high school but, unable to secure a teaching position instantly, initially complemented his work wage by advertising short stories to men's magazines such as Cavalier. Some of these early tales have been published in the Night Shift Series. The short story The Raft was written in the men's journal Adam. Since being charged for removing traffic cones, he was assessed $250 for minor larceny, but he has little funds to compensate. Yet the invoice came for The Raft, and King cashed it to cover the fee. King was employed as an instructor at the Hampden Academy in Hampden, Maine, in 1971.

On 2 January 1971, King married Tabitha Spruce. She's a philanthropist and author too. The family has three residences and breaks up their time: one in Bangor, in Maine; one in Lovell, in Maine; and a house on the beach every winter every Sarasota, Florida, on the Mexican Ocean. The Kings have three sons, a daughter, two sons, and four grandsons.
