Food plays an important role in building muscle. Food also plays an important role in losing weight. Muscle building is a lot about how muscular you are as opposed to the number of exercises that you do.

While trying to build muscle, people sometimes take protein shakes with the belief that it will help them build muscle. However, on the flip side, they are not always healthy and might even Affect the kidneys.

Eating the right foods with the right nutrients is key to building a great body.

Protein is a complex term. It may encompass different amino acids. A variety of these is essential and non-essential. Essential meaning that the body cannot produce these by itself and non-essential meaning that the body can produce them. Our diets must consist of these amino acids. Some of these are[i]

  • Leucine

  • Lysine

  • Methionine

  • Phenylalanine

  • Threonine

Some of the good foods to eat for optimal muscle building[ii] are:

  1. Eggs: Eggs are a great source of protein. The protein is used up in the right places when you exercise.

  2. Soybeans: For the complete vegetarians, soybeans are their best bet. Also applicable for Vegan. Soybeans are rich in phosphorous and iron. These two nutrients are extremely important in healthy living.

  3. Salmon: It is rich in Omega 3 fatty acids. A good choice for muscle building.

  4. Chicken Breast: A great source of protein.

After a workout, our bodies try to re-build it’s glycogen stores and repair the muscle proteins. Hence, it is crucial to eat protein-rich food after workouts. Exercise causes tiny tears in muscle fibers. Hence the post-workout meal ensures that the body repairs efficiently and provides us with maximum gains. It is also important to rest after a workout. The body needs time to heal from the stress that has been caused by the stress on the muscles. People often make the mistake of restricting caloric intake when trying to build muscle. This is not the way to build muscle. Muscle is primarily the fuel that the body will have to turn to as fuel when the calorie intake is low. When you don’t eat much, the body will go into the mode of starvation which will not decrease the fat stores. When exercising to build muscle, there is no restriction to restrict calories for losing weight. Maintaining a balanced diet is key.
